Sorbead Air R is BASF's alumino-silicate gel desiccant for compressed air drying: hard, spherical beads of 97% silica and 3% alumina, light brown to brown, in the 2 to 5 mm grade that BASF identifies as Sorbead Air R 2050. As a silica alumina gel it adsorbs water vapor on a large internal surface, 700 to 750 m²/g on the product data sheet, with an equilibrium capacity of 38 to 40% of its weight at 25°C and 80% relative humidity, and the beads resist crushing and attrition through repeated adsorption and regeneration cycles. BASF lists a typical desorption temperature of 120 to 150°C (248 to 302°F), lower than activated alumina or molecular sieve typically require, and pressure dew points down to about -60°C (-76°F) in the dried air. The standard grade is moisture resistant but not resistant to liquid water, so BASF recommends a guard layer of 15 to 20% Sorbead Air WS, which Interra Global also supplies, above the main bed wherever condensate can reach the media. In Interra Global's silica gel line, sSORB® White Silica Gel Beads cover general desiccant service and packaging, the blue and orange indicating grades give a visible saturation check, and Sorbead Air R is the grade for buyers who specify Sorbead Air by name. Where a dryer runs heatless or sees liquid water, activated alumina such as aSORB® is typically specified instead. Typical Chemical Composition: 97% SiO₂, 3% Al₂O₃ Typical Applications Sorbead Air R is typically used for:
Sizes and Packaging
Sorbead Air R ships in 330 lb (150 kg) steel drums and 1,875 lb (850 kg) super sacks. Interra Global supplies it by the drum or the super sack, and lead time is confirmed at quote. Charge weight, guard-layer depth, and dew point target for a particular dryer are taken up by Interra Global's technical staff when a buyer brings them. |
